DVD Afternoon Podcast #86: Paw-Paw's Got A Brand New Bag

The new episode of the podcast is a little late in coming, but I think your patience will be rewarded with a jam-packed session of movie chatter. Not only do Heather Noel and I find ourselves disagreeing about both films in the main review segments (Miranda July's hipsters-in-crisis drama The Future and Mike Cahill's low-budget sci-fi flick Another Earth), but we also have some lively back-and-forth about a whole carload of new DVD releases, including the Paul Rudd comedy Our Idiot Brother, the gimmicky Anne Hathaway/Jim Sturges romantic drama One Day, the Werner Herzog documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams, and the cult horror comedy Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil. Plus, we kick off the show with a fun, tangent-filled discussion that includes a mini-review of the bizarre 2004 Nicole Kidman metaphysical drama Birth, a report on the PBS special Woody Allen: A Documentary, speculation on the possibly seizure-inducing properties of Breaking Dawn, and a Muppets-inspired debate on whether there are, in fact, an unusual number of "songs about rainbows and what's on the other side," or, as I contend, only one.

Here's how it all breaks down:

0:00 — Intro/The Muppets/Birth/Breaking Dawn/Woody Allen: A Documentary
20:06 — Miniskirt, "Woody Allen Likes Japanese Noise Rock"
21:10 — The Future
36:51 — Sparks, "In The Future"
37:49 — Another Earth
50:56 — The Only Ones, "Another Planet, Another Girl"
52:08 — Other noteworthy new DVDs and Blu-Rays

Here's a link (embedding disabled) to Nicole Kidman's celebrated close-up-at-the-opera scene from Birth.

Here's a clip from the 1960s British TV show Hippodrome featuring Woody Allen boxing a kangaroo:

And here's a tantalizing clip of Sabu from his breakthrough film, Elephant Boy:

You can subscribe to DVD Afternoon through iTunes, or you can download this week's episode directly by clicking here.

And if you'd like to comment on the show, respond to our reviews, or suggest other movies for Heather and me to talk about on the air, you can reach us at dvdafternoon [at] gmail [dot] com. In an effort to spark more listener interaction with the show, Heather and I have made a slight change to the show: starting with next week's episode, we'll be reviewing movies the week after they come out on DVD, which we hope will make it easier for you to watch the movies we'll be discussing in advance and get more involved with our comments about them. Our next episode, for instance, will go live on December 11 and contain reviews of the Criterion edition of Ernst Lubitsch's Design for Living and the Helen Mirren espionage thriller The Debt, both of which come out on DVD on December 6.

If you've seen those films and want to send us your thoughts about them, or if you'd like to add to our discussion of The Future and Another Earth (or ask us any questions about movies and DVDs in general), we'd love to hear your thoughts (and possibly read them on-air).
